Francene Steinberg has received the 2017-18 California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics award for Excellence in Research. Her research program, which encompasses basic research, clinical studies, and community interventions, has generated new knowledge related to the benefits of fruits and vegetables to cardiovascular and bone health and paved the way to policy and dietary guidance recommendations. Her dissemination of research findings related to plant phytochemicals and human health is important in improving the quality of health and reducing US health care costs. Dr. Steinberg's teaching contributions to the UC Davis Didactic Program in Dietetics for more than 20 years, leadership as Chair of the UC Davis Nutrition Department, and professional service to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and other Nutrition societies are equally impressive and factored into her selection for this award. Presentation of the award will be May 3, 2018 at the annual conference of the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
